Bookshelves in Public Spaces

And what about bookshelves in the neighborhood–right out there in public spaces?  Yes!  They exist, and they’re even an international movement to build neighborhood and community literacy to supplement your local library.

Check out Little Free Library.

You can’t go wrong with this Mission Statement:

  • To promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide.
  • To build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations.

They have helpful suggestions for building your own, for purchasing kits, or for donating to make Little Free Libraries a reality across the globe.   There may be some near you to visit.  We found  several on this helpful map:

Be sure to let us know if you decide to visit–or start your own!

And for interested readers, here’s a little history on the movement.
