So, back in 2010, we started a fun series with Erin Ocon’s eighth-grade students in Hillsboro, Oregon. Several of her kids wrote thoughtful essays on a recently-read book, and we had a really great opportunity to get the inside scoop on what real kids in the 8th grade were reading (as opposed to what Hollywood, mainstream media, or some antiquated syllabus would have us believe). Then last year, we did it again. This year, a new group of articulate and insightful kids gives us the 2013 version of what is new, or newly discovered, in the eighth grade this year.
For the next week we’ll publish a new review from a smart and insightful 8th grader who was kind enough to share with us not only what they’re reading, but why they liked it, and recommend that we read it (if we haven’t). We hope it inspires you to pick up a new recommendation, or revisit one of your own favorite books that inspired you at that age. (I know I already ordered The Beyonders, which has been on my list if things to try and get to, but I just haven’t gotten to it, based on Christina’s recommendation.)
