April 19th-Celebrating Jazz

It’s Jazz Appreciation Month!

For tweens and teens, you can’t go wrong with this picture book of jazz music poems.  The power of jazz with its beat and rhythms, syncopation and pace, can really draw in this age group and interest them in the fascinating history, art, and musical heritage of the repertoire of jazz forms.  And who better to offer a tribute to jazz than this talented father-and-son team?

Jazz by Walter Dean Myers, illustrated by Christopher Myers

The double-spread illustrations absolutely pulsate with the rhythms of jazz.  And the text is poetic and then some, filled with rhymes that feel like drumbeats.  The sophisticated poems draw readers into the power of the beats, and the way different instruments add to the whole.  A great find.
