Cool Cats Head to School

It’s time to go back to school, and this year there are two new titles from some favorite cool cats, both about heading to school…

Pete the Cat:  Rocking in My School Shoes by Eric Litwin, illustrated by James Dean

Pete the Cat (from Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes) is back and this time he’s rockin’ his school shoes as he heads to school.  Each new page has some clues about where Pete is headed next in his school day and lets kids guess where that might be, then Pete sings about what he’s doing there – always in his school shoes.  The pictures are bright and fun, and the song is catchy and irresistible.  Not feeling musical enough to come up with your own tune?  Listen to author Eric Litwin sing the song with a bunch of kids!

Skippy Jon Jones:  Class Action by Judy Schachner

Holy Guacamole!  Everyone’s favorite cat-who-thinks-he’s-a-chihuahua is back for his 6th adventure.  No matter that his Mama says that school is just for dogs, with a trip into his closet and some help from los chimichangos, Skippyjon meets (and triumphs over) poodles and beagles and even a bully – oh my!  With characteristic imagination and joie de vivre, this book delights.  As does the cd read by the author, that comes with the book.  Perfect for listening to in the car, on the way to school!

Side note (from Meghan):  This year my kids are great big 4 1/2 year olds who are heading back to school.  But last year at this time, they were leaving the nest for their first school adventure, and I was looking everywhere for books about starting school to get us ready.  And here’s the list from last year of our favorites!
