Kenny Recommends ERAGON

Kenny Truong, a seventh grader for Hillsboro, Oregon recommends. . .

Eragon by Christopher Paolini

Do you like dragons, magic, and swordplay? You can get all that in one book called Eragon by Christopher Paolini.

The story starts with a shade named Durza hunting three elves that are protecting something in a bag. They suddenly gallop by on their brave stallions. Durza and his soldiers (called Urgals) ambush the elves. Two of the elves are slain by arrows while one rides on. Durza sets fire to surrounding trees to corner the lone elf. At the last possible moment, the elf teleports the bag to a safer location with magic. An enraged Durza strikes down the elf but keeps her alive as a prisoner to get closely guarded secrets out.

A young boy named Eragon is hunting in the forest called The Spine. The Spine is a forest that the people of Carvahall think is cursed. You can go in, but the chances of coming back out are slim. Eragon has been hunting a deer for many days. If he didn’t catch it by the end of the day, he would have to return home empty handed. Without warning, a flash of blue light scares the deer into running away. In its place was a polished, blue stone. Disappointed, Eragon returns home in hopes of selling the stone. The butcher named Sloan refuses to trade meat for the stone and gets in a huge fight with Eragon. Luckily, the blacksmith named Horst intervenes and buys the meat for Eragon before they could exchange blows.  Eragon tries to trade the stone in the winter when the traders come. They decline the offer and Eragon keeps the stone. One day the stone starts  to make pecking noises. It is not a stone. Instead, it is a dragon egg. The empire now hunts for Eragon and even went as far to killing his uncle! Not wanting to endanger his friends in Carvahall, he leaves and takes the danger away with him. Will Eragon make it out of this predicament alive? Read this book to find out.

You should read this book for a variety of reasons. First of all, the author Christopher Paolini is really great at making each scene as vivid as possible. He uses strong action words such as impaled, trust, lunged and parried. These words make the story come alive. You should also read this book if you like fantasy. Eragon has swordplay, dragons, magic and occasionally even romance. This is one of the best fantasy stories ever written in the world. According to Wikipedia, Eragon was the third best book in 2003 and placed second in 2005.

In conclusion, people that have a never-ending love for fantasy should read this book. This book is also a book full of hardships and teaches people how even when the odds are against you, you can still pull out of it with an unlikely victory.
