Melissa Recommends NEW MOON

Eighth grader Melissa Taylor from Hillsboro, Oregon recommends. . .

New Moon: Book 2 in The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer

“Running faster and faster I can barely feel the ground below me.  Just got to get there and stop him, but oh no I’m too late.”  This event from the book took place when Edward thought Bella was dead so he decided to go to the Voltri to talk to the vampires.  New Moon is filled with these kinds of things, suspense/action, romance, drama, and humor.  I recommend this book because of the suspense building up and the drama.  New Moon is the second in the Twilight saga.

New Moon has more and more suspense and action building up that it’s hard to put the book down.  Bella is the main character and she is willing to take risks that involve a mixture of adrenaline, danger, and some stupidity.  She takes these risks to see her hallucinations of Edward.  Edward Cullen is Bella’s boyfriend.  Edward’s character is a funny, romantic, and serious kind of guy.  As you may know,  Edward and his family the Cullens are kind of a adopted family.  Also, the Cullens as we know are vampires with special abilities and drink blood. The only Cullen that can stand the sight of blood is Carlisle, the head of the family, since he has worked as a doctor in Forks for a long time, and is used to blood.  Jacob Black, one of Bella’s old friends is a character in the story that goes through a big change, one that Edward has a conflict with.

The main key events in the story are when Bella goes to her birthday party at the Cullens.  Bella gets a lot of cool presents like a stereo for her truck. When Bella was opening the present Edward and Alice got her, Bella got a paper cut.  When Bella slowly pulled her finger out of the wrapping paper to examine it, Jasper was freaking out and everyone was trying to hold him back.  Edward pushed Bella with a big force making her fly and hit a table making glass fly all over her and she had blood flowing down from about the middle of the upper part of her arm to her elbow.   Carlisle gave her stitches and that was when the Cullens went out of town.  Bella feels completely hopeless and she takes life-threatening stunts like jumping off a cliff in a strong and fierce current.

In New Moon, there is a lot of good humor that can make you laugh out loud.  Each character has their own kind of humor, in a way that makes all the characters unique.  An example is at Bella’s birthday party at the Cullens, Emmett, Rosalie, and Jasper gave Bella her gift they all got her. When Bella opened the gift it was empty and they were all giggling.  Jasper explains that it was a stereo for her truck, “Emmett’s installing it right now, so you can’t return it.”  I thought that showed how each character has a good sense of humor.

New Moon is a book filled with suspense and action. At first the event will seem small, then it would turn into a huge suspenseful event.  Also, the action is so thrilling that it feels so real, like you are in the story and when you put down the book you feel kind of confused of where you are.  Another thing is that when it has a suspense/action scene the author always has tons of details.  A very suspenseful scene is when Bella jumps off a cliff to see her hallucinations of Edward.  Then, she found herself fighting in a super strong current.  This quote explains what Bella was thinking and doing when she was caught in the current.  “I forced my arms to continue reaching, my legs to kick harder, though every second I was facing a new direction. It couldn’t be doing any good.”

The book is also filled with romance.  Edward and Bella are the couple that cause the romance in the book.  Edward came over to visit Bella and she always states the look of his eyes.  The author is very descriptive on the vivid color of Edward’s color-changing eyes.  “He gave my fingers a gentle squeeze.  I looked into his liquid topaz eyes, and my heart gave a not-quite-so-gentle squeeze of its own.  Hearing the stutter in my heartbeats, he smiled again.”  I think that romance is a good part in a story.

There is also some drama in the book as we know from the previous book, TwilightNew Moon has intense drama we can all relate to.  When the Cullens leave town for several days and Bella has the feeling of something missing, she doesn‘t do anything but sit around all day inside.  “Time passes.  Even when it seems impossible. Even when each trick of the second hand aches like the pulse of blood behind a bruise.  It passes unevenly, in strange lurches and dragging lulls, but pass it does. Even for me.”  I think that paragraph in the book has very good sensory details about time passing slowly.

Ultimately, New Moon is a great book and I recommend it.  To all the people that enjoy books with suspense/action, romance, drama, and humor, this book is totally for you!
