New Additions: Trucks and Pirates

-posted by Meghan

“Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds…”  That’s one of my favorite lines from one of the greatest sonnets ever written, (IMHO) and has been stuck in my head as I write about changing our lists.  It’s the exact opposite of how we feel about book lists.  The very best should alter all the time as new books are published or discovered!

And a couple of new books (new to us, not necessarily published recently) that belong on some of our existing lists have recently come to our attention:

Tip Tip Dig Dig by Emma Garcia is a wonderful trucks book, that belongs on every truck lovers shelf. The pictures are bright and bold, the words repetitive, and the message is even really positive- with all the trucks working together, they can recycle everything from a dump heap into an adventure playground.  What I love about this book is that in it’s simplicity, there is actually a lot to talk about as your truck lover grows.  We started out chanting the words (“With the Roller, we can Roll Roll Roll…”) when we first read the book (around 18 months old).  Then both kids memorized the book and would read it to me.  Now, we talk about the different color that each truck is and what it does and how the pieces of trash were recycled.  There is a great follow up book too, Toot Toot Beep Beep.

And have you read all our other favorite truck books?

Bubble Bath Pirates by Jarrett Krosoczka came to our attention as we have become obsessed with one of the author’s other great works: Punk Farm.  Krosoczka is a wonderful author who writes with a voice similar to Mo Willems and Jon Scieszka… – it’s that fun and funny modern voice that kids love and relate to instantly.  This simple book about two little boy pirates who have fun in the tub, then plunder the kitchen for ice cream is really appealing to young kids who love pirates, bath time and ice cream, but maybe aren’t as big fans of hair rinsing or pulling the plug from the drain.  And don’t miss our other top pirate tales!
