These beautiful books are really a pairing of picture books, one for kids and one for adults featuring the beautiful paper-cut illustrations of artist Nikki McClure.

all-in-a-dayAll in a Day by Cynthia Rylant , illustrated by Nikki McClure.

The book has a simple storyline with gentle, poetic text, a limited color palate of black, blue, and yellow, and bold paper-cut illustrations. The tone is one of wonderment. Readers young and old are invited to join in a simple contemplation of the beauty and promise of a single day—with work and rest, comforts and surprises. Cynthia Rylant tells the story of a boy’s day with simple yet poetic words: “The past is sailing off to sea, the future’s fast asleep.” Much of the power of this book is in the cut paper illustrations and elegant simplicity of the images and words.

collect-rainsropsCollect Raindrops: The Seasons Gathered is an elegant and beautiful follow-up from Nikki McClure; this oversize book of images is a poster-sized picture book for adults. The changing seasons are represented with bold images that are reminiscent of woodcut blockprints and stress themes such as slowing down the world for a moment so we can actually taste it, looking up at the stars to dream, being in community, and savoring tender moments with our family and friends. The gorgeous images spark memories and invite stories. We’ve loved sharing the book at family gatherings, as well as sitting alone in a comfy chair for quiet reflection.
